One of the best
parts of being in a relationship is the chance to come up with huge, creative
shows of affection that will really wow your guy. A surprise birthday trip to
an Airbnb in a neighboring city? Awesome. A time-intensive art project that you
just know will impress him for your anniversary? Fantastic. But you don’t have
to save the sweetness for big moments—tiny day-to-day gestures can strengthen
your bond too.
To that end, I
reached out to a few guys to hear the little things their partners did that
meant a lot to them. Here are their anonymous comments, so as not to embarrass
anyone with the (adorable) mushiness you’re about to read:
* “A time that comes to mind is a night
I showed up at my girlfriend’s place, expecting we’d head out somewhere for
dinner. She came to the door with a big smile and the house smelled like the
homemade pizza she’d been making for us. Turns out she’d just set off the smoke
detector because it was kind of a new cooking experiment, but the pizza was on
point. The fact that she was trying something for me she hadn’t perfected yet
just made it better, and I was so happy.”
1 “I would say the best things are when
a woman overhears you mention something you like—be it a food, drink, movie,
product, etc.—and gives it to you. Unprompted. For no reason other than to show
that she’s listening.”
2 “I like whenever my girlfriend does something
that I normally do without me asking her to do it. Like taking out the garbage
or emptying the dishwasher. I do those things all the time cause it’s like ‘the
dirty work.’ But every now and then I’ll go to do it and she’ll have taken care
of it already.”
3 “It’s the little things. It’s a kiss
when I come home, having dinner ready without me asking who’s cooking or what
we’re eating, watching football on Sundays.”
4 “Women don’t have to do a lot for us
to feel appreciated. For most guys, they feel lucky to be with the girl they’re
with, and we feel like we need to do stuff to make sure they’re happy. Anything
a girl does goes a long way because they could do nothing and we’d still love
them because they have boobs.”
That’s, uh,
encouraging? And a few from my female friends, just in the name of equality:
5 “He got drunk and divulged his secret
passion for making scented linen sprays. I ordered a book about organic
aromatherapy recipes and had it sent to his house so he could make all the
sprays his inner Martha Stewart desired!”
6“Do something slightly embarrassing
like dance insanely in a bar. It’s about letting go and exposing a more relaxed
side of yourself. I think most women worry about being perfect on dates, but
getting down and dancing like crazy clues him into just how fun you can be.
Plus, doing something embarrassing really binds people together, like it’s you
two against the world!”
7 “It always helps to indulge whatever
he obsesses over, even if you don’t love it. My boyfriend loves sci-fi, so if
he’s reading a new book he’s really into, sometimes I’ll ask what he thinks of
the plot or if he has any hunches about how it’s going to end. I’m not a huge
fan of the genre, but I can tell he really loves talking about it, so I’ll
humor him. He does the same with me!”
8 “I wrote a haiku about how cute he
was and gave it to him on our second date. He said he kept it in his wallet all
week.”
9 Pretty simple, right? The beauty of
small gestures is that even though they’re little, they’re packed with
meaning—you don’t need the fireworks just to make an impression. The point is
really to prove you truly know who he is. When it comes to showing your love,
bigger isn’t always better!
